Artist Profile

Joanna Sulkowski

Joanna Sulkowski is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in fashion and textile design. She has shown work in many exhibitions and festivals in Australia and overseas.

Her practice is predominantly site-specific and installation based, with many of her works characteristically using text. One of Sulkowski’s biggest projects to date was for the City of Perth’s ephemeral public art program, TRANSART- Transition, where she developed a work entitled Elevated Conversations- a course of aerial banners flown over Perth’s CBD displaying ambiguous, intimate messages, causing an ensuing public sensation. Joanna has also worked for many local arts organisations and been involved in various artist run initiatives, including being one of the founding directorial members of Paper Mountain.

In 2019, Joanna curated HERE&NOW: Material Culture at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery (UWA).

Sulkowski is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in fashion and textile design. She works with installations and public interventions investigating themes of domesticity, space and
habitation. Often working in the urban environment with unconventional materials such as packaging products and found objects, noticing the unnoticed and transformation of materials are persistent motifs in her practice.
