Artist Profile
Richard Hammer
Richard Hammer likes to make things that move in the wind and add a bit of colour and movement to the world. He tries to make things that are unpredictable, even chaotic, within fairly wide bounds. He makes a big effort to reuse, recycle and repurpose materials, especially when he can produce an outrageous but loving surprise.
His creations are intended to be simple in design and construction, using inexpensive, commonly available materials, but definitely complex and exciting in behavior. Their homespun appearance encourages feelings of being close, normal, ordinary, but yet somehow strange.

Whirlitunias is a collection of wind-driven, rotating wheels.
Brightly coloured, these playful oversized flowers together
form a small cluster, where each member is free to revolve
in response to the wind. Each individual component, made
up of two contra-rotating wheels of different sizes, maintains its own delicate choreography while together they present an ensemble all dancing to the same music.
