Artist Statement
The undulating placement of repurposed hinges and their rusty patinas hint at a previous life and seafaring history. Fair Winds and Following Seas is a salutatory wish for good weather and safe travels to those leaving port. It implies that wind and sea direction are generally the same and therefore a vessel will not have to pound into the waves. This work incorporates an awareness of the inherent dangers brought by the sea’s fluctuating moods to those who set sail.
