We appreciate the public’s interest and engagement in the 2025 Sculpture at Bathers exhibition, and we would like to clarify the details surrounding the selection process and the concerns raised regarding a specific artist’s entry.

Some recent media coverage has provided an inaccurate and misleading representation of the process. We would like to emphasize that the selection process for this year’s exhibition was both thorough and rigorous. With over 100 submissions received, only 31 outdoor sculptures were selected for display, in addition to 23 indoor sculptures. The artist in question, Greg James, was not among those selected.

The selection process follows a clearly defined set of criteria, which can be found on our official entry form. Submissions are assessed based on several values, including:

  • Artistic merit
  • Suitability for public exhibition
  • Visual impact
  • Diversity of materials and creative approach
  • Site suitability

We wish to highlight that the exhibition has clear Terms and Conditions that every artist agrees to upon entering. These terms include the understanding that the selectors’ decision is final and confidential. Greg James, along with all other unsuccessful applicants, was notified of the outcome in September 2024.

It is important to note that the exhibition does feature other sculptures of the naked human figure, and the presence of nudity is not a factor in the selection process. We believe that the concerns expressed may stem from a misunderstanding, and we encourage all to enjoy the diversity and vibrancy of this year’s exhibition, which showcases the exceptional talent of Western Australian sculptors.

Thankyou for understanding and continued support of the arts.

We hope to see you at the exhibition

Kind Regards

S@B Committee
